In the heart of Southwestern Uganda, amidst the rolling dairy farms of Buremba, a young girl held a flashlight as her mother, Joy, a devoted midwife, brought new life into the world. That girl, Maureen Alice Torr, would grow to become a beacon of hope for many, illuminating paths of education, empowerment, and community development.
Born into a large, hardworking family, Maureen’s early years were shaped by resilience and responsibility. Her mother’s unwavering compassion for children, orphans, and the less fortunate left an indelible mark on her. Witnessing the hardships of war, displacement, and the struggle for basic necessities, Maureen learned the power of service and perseverance at an early age.
Her journey took a pivotal turn when she moved to Kampala as a teenager to support her sister’s children while pursuing her education. With sheer determination, she built a catering business that employed many people. However, life had bigger plans. In 2004, Maureen embarked on a new chapter in Saskatoon, Canada, facing cultural shifts, a harsh winter, and the challenge of starting over.
Despite these obstacles, Maureen pursued higher education, earning a degree in Political Science from the University of Saskatchewan. She thrived in business, became an entrepreneur, and deeply integrated herself into the community through service and volunteerism. But her heart remained in Uganda, with the children and families who lacked opportunities for a better future.
Motivated by her mother’s legacy, Maureen founded Joy’s Centre Corporation, an orphanage and school in Buremba. Her vision was clear: to provide quality education, clean water, and a nurturing environment for children to thrive. With the unwavering support of the Rotary Club of Saskatoon and a global grant, Maureen led transformative initiatives, including drilling a sustainable water well, improving sanitation, and integrating community development programs into education.
Through every challenge—financial constraints, infrastructure setbacks, and even battling COVID-19 while on-site in Uganda—Maureen’s resolve never wavered. Her dedication earned her recognition for her leadership and commitment to humanitarian service.
Today, Joy’s Centre stands as a symbol of hope, serving many students and empowering communities. Maureen’s story is not just one of personal triumph but of collective transformation. Her journey from holding a flashlight in a dimly lit maternity hut to leading a global movement for change embodies the true essence of a vision bearer.
With every step she takes, Maureen Alice Torr continues to light the way for future generations, proving that one person’s passion can ignite a world of possibilities.
